Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League officials are ensuring that the referees are making the right calls and are not favoring any team during games, according to league commissioner Kenneth Duremdes.
In an interview with Courtside Philippines, Duremdes revealed that MPBL founder Senator Manny Pacquiao has instructed league officials to make game officiating a top priority.
“Yun ang order sa atin ni Senator. This league will grow if the officials are doing their jobs the right way. So sabi niya may mga leagues na nagfo-fold mainly because of the officiating na napapasok ng kung anu-ano dyan,” Duremdes said.
“Sabi ni [Sen. Pacquiao], ito yung liga na ang number 1 priority natin, naka-focus tayo sa officiating. Dito tayo mabubuhay and dito tayo tatagal,” he said.
Duremdes admits that referees have not been perfect in doing their jobs.
“As I’ve said, this is a new league. The officials, they’re only humans, they’re not perfect. Sometimes, nakikita niyo na nagre-react ako, it’s because there’s something wrong and there’s room for improvement,” Duremdes said.
“I want to show them na I’m serious when it comes to officiating. It doesn’t mean that they are getting paid or they are giving favors to other teams,” the commissioner added.
Duremdes also said that the referees are undergo continuous training to help them improve.
“Actually ang training ng referees, we have Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday games, ‘pag Friday and Sunday nag-te-training sila. Pinapatawag sila, nirereview nila yung mga mali nila,” he said.
The commissioner also revealed that they used a new system to assign the referees that will officiate the games during the Datu Cup Finals.
“Nung nanalo ang San Juan over Manila sa Division Finals, Game 3, kung sino nag-officiate don, ‘yon ang dinala natin sa Finals. Nung nanalo ang Davao Occidental sa Batangas nung Game 3, kung sino nag-officiate na apat don, yun yung kinuha natin apat. Pinag-combine natin sila. So win-win sila dito,” he said.
From those eight officials, the two teams picked which referees will call each game of the Finals.
“The best thing that happened dito sa Finals series is manalo, matalo tanggap nila. Kumbago tanggap nila na nanalo sila sa laro, natalo sila sa laro. And hopefully ma-improve pa natin.”
