John Wilson takes pleasure in exacting sweet revenge to Davao
by Jim Lemuel Wilson, April 30, 2019 11:45pm
John Wilson took a lot of pleasure in breaking the hearts of the Davao Occidental Tigers in Game 5 of the National Finals in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Datu Cup.
With the Knights down by seven with two minutes left in the game and the Tigers seemingly on their way to winning the crown, San Juan unleashed an 8-0 run to steal the game and the first-ever MPBL national championship from the hands of the home team.
During the dying moments of the game, however, both Wilson nearly gave up. His motivation to exact revenge, however, kept him going.
In Game 4, the Knights appeared to be on their way to winning the crown as they went up by 10 in the fourth quarter. The Tigers, however, dominated the rest of the way.
“Nung Game 4 talaga, ang mind set namin is tapusin na. Kasi nga masarap mag champion sa home court, dahil yung unang liga nila comm, nag-champion din sila [Batangas City Athletics] sa [home court] ng kalaban. So everybody was hoping na don na kami magcha-champion," Wilson said on Tuesday in a session of the Philippine Sportswriters Association forum.
“Masakit yung ginawa sa amin nung Game 4. So ang mindset namin, dapat mas masakit [yung ibabalik namin] sa Davao,” Wilson added.
Exact revenge they did, and in the most heartbreaking fashion at that, as Davao’s own Jhonard Clarito scored the last six points for the Knights, including the game-winning basket.
