Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League officials are looking to serve players, team owners, fans, and other stakeholders a better show next conference, and at the top of their priorities is shortening the tournament schedule.
“That’s what we are planning. Our number 1 priority is to shorten the tournament,” MPBL Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes said in an exclusive interview with Courtside Philippines.
“Yun talaga ang priority namin so that the teams can adjust and minimize their expenses and operation cost, same with us,” he added.
That, however, is going to be a tough task as the league is also looking to have more teams playing for next season. In an earlier interview, Duremdes told Courtside Philippines that the MPBL is looking to have four to six more teams next season. MPBL founder Manny Pacquiao confirmed the statement.
“More exciting yung mga susunod na seasons pa dahil nadagdagan yung mga teams natin sa MPBL. Sumali yung Albay at may mga lugar pa na sasali pa. So mas exciting pa yung magiging laro ng MPBL next season,” said Pacquiao after Game 5 of the Datu Cup Finals.
Head of Basketball Operations Zaldy Realubit, meanwhile, told Courtside Philippines that they are looking at the possibility of having four games per game day, with two games each to be played in separate venues.
The recently concluded Datu Cup started on June 12, 2018. It officially ended on April 25, 2019. The next tournament is set to begin after the NBA Finals, according to Duremdes.
