Rain or Shine needs to become a consistent defensive team says Head Coach Caloy Garcia
by Reynald Magallon, April 15, 2019 6:19pm
Rain or Shine Head Coach Caloy Garcia said that defense was the key in Game Two Rain or Shine once again notched another lopsided victory over Magnolia Hotshots, 93-80, in their Semifinal series at the Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday.
"The defense was the key today," Garcia said in his post-game interview.
"We really helped out on everybody and we were able to limit their guards, Barocca, Melton even I think si Paul we were able to slow down today," he added.
True enough, Magnolia shot just 39 percent from the field and a measly 28 percent from downtown. The trio of Mark Barroca, Justin Melton and Jio Jalalon was just limited to just nine points combined. Rain or Shine also limited Paul Lee to just 12 points.
"I think in order for us to win the series, we have to be consistent on being a good defensive team," the ROS chief tactician said.
The great defensive game plan was also complimented by good offensive rhythm for the Elastopainters as their bench players once again stepped up for them. Rain or Shine supporting cast led by Ed Daquioag and Norbert Torres set the tone for Rain or Shine early in the game.
"I think we just started the game on fire I think Norbert came out, he was hitting his three point shots. He scored 16 points kaagad and I think that threw them off," said Garcia on his sweet shooting big man.
"I just tried to mix up the players and everybody came in stepped up again like I said it’s all about consistency, if we can be consistent we will be good."
Garcia also believed that this super sub's fine play could be attributed to the trust their getting from the coaching staffs and teammates.
"I think it s just about the way we started the season, we told them that we have to trust each other, if you noticed in the eliminations bihira namin gamitin sina Rey, sina ed but then we talked about it and I told them we just have to be ready everygame every body has to come out," Garcia explained.
Garcia though is bracing for the pivotal Game 3 that according to hime, will be crucial for both teams.
"Long break kasi mahirap kasi pag matalo ka sa magnolia then they have one week to prepare so they will be able to become healthier. The same thing with us so for me I think crucial yung game 3 sa amin."
