San Antonio Spurs' shooting guard Marco Belinelli is set to join Italy in the FIBA World Cup slated on August 30 to September 15 in China.
Belinelli, 33, told Dario Ronzulli of the Italian newspaper Tuttosport that he is competing with the Italian national basketball team after a talk with head coach Romeo Saccheti and the officials of the Italian Basketball Federation.
“After we qualified (in the World Cup) I spoke with Gianni Petrucci (president of Italian Basket Federation) and with Sacchetti a few days ago. I discussed with my teammates as well. We are all happy,” said the 6-foot-5 Belinelli who last played for Italy in the 2017 EuroBasket.
“We know the bar is high now. Our dream is to achieve something important with the national team. I confirm my participation,” added Belinelli who put up 10.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists for the Spurs this NBA regular season.
Italy is bracketed in Group D of the tournament together with Serbia, Angola, and the Philippines.
