Representatives from Albay, Davao City, Mabalacat, and Olongapo have sent a Letter of Intent to join the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League next season.

In a short interview with Courtside Philippines, MPBL Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes confirmed the development, but noted that nothing is final and official just yet.

“We’re not sure yet until they sign. They sent us a Letter of Intent but then again we’re still waiting for their confirmation, which is the signing of agreement,” he said.

Duremdes added that they are looking to finalize the list of the teams who will be competing in the next league season during the on-going playoffs.

“We advised them that at least during the playoffs time na, if they are really willing to come in, then we’ll do it during playoffs. Kasi gagawa na kami ng schedule for next season, so kailangan na namin na ma-complete yung mga teams,” Duremdes added.

The MPBL had 10 teams in its inaugural season that saw the Batangas City Athletics winning the Rajah Cup crown. The league is currently in the middle of the playoffs of its second season that saw 26 teams competing.

In a previous interview with Courtside Philippines, Duremdes said that he feels that the MPBL is “on the right track”.

“So for us, we’re on the right track on developing players, and we’re on the right track on giving these players more opportunities,” he said.
