PBA return can help ease fans' 'lockdown fatigue', says Guiao

The resumption of the 45th Season of the Philippine Basketball Association will be beneficial not just to the teams and the players but also to the fans who are suffering from depression and anxiety due to the country's current situation with the COVID-19 Pandemic.
That, according to the NLEX Road Warriors head coach Yeng Guiao who believed that the return for the league will give this basketball-crazy nation some kind of boost and inspiration during this health crisis.
"May mga naririnig na tayong mental issues, depressions, lungkot, anxiety. Tingin ko if we can provide some entertainment, makakatulong tayo sa issue na ito," said Guiao in a report by PBA.ph
The entire Luzon island was put on a Community Quarantine since the spread of the virus for the majority of its parts. That put the majority of the people stuck in their homes which, in some reports, led to depression and anxiety due to the threat of the health crisis.
This is where Guiao believed the PBA could help the public, to ease the so-called 'lockdown fatigue' as the league provides entertainment as well as hope and inspiration to the people.
"May lockdown fatigue na nga. That's the price we have to pay for now. But we can contribute na kalimutan panandalian ang sitwasyon. And if they can see na nakakagalaw na ang PBA, makakapagbigay ito ng hope and set direction. Makakatulong tayo as a league," added Guiao.
However, the resumption of the stalled Philippine Cup will be easier said than done considering the threat of the virus to the players, the PBA personnel and the fans as well. Guiao, though, is seeing the light at the end of the tunnel as some of the major leagues overseas are now starting to resume play.
Guiao said the PBA can follow what these leagues did to ensure the safety of everyone once the play resumes.
"There are many concepts and ideas already being discussed. There's the Germany model for their Bundesliga na nakabalik na," said Guiao.
The PBA, meanwhile, is already studying the possible protocols and guidelines they will be putting up once the authorities allow mass gatherings. They are also now looking into the possibility of allowing the teams to have their players work out in small groups.
"Unti-unti gagawa ng protocol and PBA, Meron silang proposed protocols. They're already talking about it right now. Nagkakaroon rin kami ng pag uusap ni kume tungkol as mga ideas. I kept referring them the models abroad," added the fiery mentor.
The PBA has set August to decide the fate of the league's 45th season which could either be a one-conference season or an entire season cancellation.
