Former CeSAFI MVP Mantilla also a frontliner as an SK Chairman in Cebu

This COVID-19 pandemic has been hitting the Philippines so hard to the point that athletes have turned themselves as frontliners just to battle it.

One of these athletes who has been working at the front lines since the pandemic and lockdown started was Jaybie Mantilla.

The former Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CeSAFI) MVP is serving his Barangay Suba in Cebu City as its Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) chairman.

Mantilla shared he was once on the receiving end of stereotypes that his SK's projects are all about basketball leagues, especially that he is a basketball player.

"May mga issue na talaga dati pa na huwag daw akong iboto kasi puro paliga lang yan," said Mantilla, who also suited up as a one-and-done player for the University of the Philippines (UP) in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season 82 Men's basketball last year.

But in this time of crisis, Mantilla and his council is breaking those stereotypes as they've been distributing face masks, hygiene kits, and vitamins to the youth and senior citizens of their Barangay.

The 5-foot-8 Mantilla, who also played for the Cebu City Sharks during the Chooks-to-Go Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Cup, has been donating half of his monthly salary from the said team to his council's budget.

Mantilla's work has been nothing but difficult. Add that to the fact that he refuses to go home to reduce the risks of his family in contracting the COVID-19.

"Hindi na ako umuuwi ng bahay," shared Mantilla, who has been staying in the barangay hall every after a day's work since this pandemic and lockdown started.

"Pumupunta na lang kapag may kukunin na mga gamit. Doon na kami sa barangay hall natutulog para maprotektahan na rin mga kasama ko sa bahay," added the former University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguar.

Mantilla is taking all of these in stride, glad that he gets to serve his people especially in these trying times.

"Masarap sa pakiramdam magserve para sa barangay kahit may halong kaba," said Mantilla, who will see action again for Cebu in MPBL's next season.

"Bilang isa sa leader ng mga kabataan dito sa amin, importanteng may puso ka sa pagseserbisyo."
