Bicol outlasts Davao Occidental to force Quarterfinals sudden death match

Bicol outlasted Davao Occidental, 84-81, in Game Two on Friday to force a sudden death Quarterfinals Game Three in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Cup South Division playoffs at the Batangas State University Gym.

Ronjay Buenafe led the eighth seed Bicol with 14 points, eight assists, and four rebounds, while Alwyn Alday came through with 18 points, five rebounds, and four assists as the Volcanoes tied the best-of three series, 1-1.

Jerome Garcia produced 18 points, five boards, and three assists as Mondragon chipped in 10 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists.

Bicol went on an 8-0 run that turned a 69-deadlock into an eight-point, 77-69 lead with 4:28 left in regulation.

However, the top seed Davao Occidental countered with seven straight points punctuated by a Marco Balagtas triple to pull within a point, 76-77, at the 3:00 mark of the fourth quarter.

Alday and Garcia gave the Volcanoes more breathing room by splitting from the line and hitting a triple, 81-76, with 1:51 to go.

A 5-2 spurt capped by a Chester Saldua layup pulled the Tigers within two, 83-81. Joseph Terso then immediately fouled Alday, who just split his charities, leaving the door open for Davao to send the game into overtime with six seconds to go.

However, Jun Mocon and Callo missed their respective three-point attempts as Bicol escaped with the win.

Calo paced Davao Occidental with 15 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while Billy Robles backstopped him with 13 markers, six boards, and two dimes.

Saldua put up 12 points and five rebounds in a losing effort.
