The Alaska Aces capped their three games stint in the four PBA team mini tournament with a close win over the San Miguel Beermen, 81-79, on Friday at the Upper Deck Gym.
Robbie Herndon showed the way for the Aces with 19 points off the bench. Rodney Brondial added 14 markers while Vic Manuel and Jvee Casio chipped in 12 points apiece.
The Aces were down by four, 37-33 heading into the third frame when they flipped the switch on on both ends of the floor. Alaska exploded for 29 points in the third frame while clamping down on the Beermen to finish just 11 points.
Alaska took a 14 point lead, 62-48 heading in to the final canto.
However, even without Terrence Romeo who seemed to have sprained his ankle when he hit a buzzer beating trey to end the first half, the Beermen put up a fight in the final frame the eventually cut the lead back to single digits with under five minutes remaining in the game.
The Aces were holding on to an eight point lead, 73-65 before the Beermen scored four straight un answered points. Herndon stopped the run with a layup but Cabagnot replied with two free throws.
Both teams then exchanged baskets in the next possessions before a layup from Arwind Santos and a booming trey from Chris Ross pulled SMB within one, 79-78 with 20 seconds left.
Manuel though scored off an inbound play to give Alaska a three point cushion. Cabagnot then split his charities before San Miguel forced Alaska to a turnover.
SMB had the chance to win it at the buzzer but Cabagnot back rimmed his three point try.
Cabagnot was the lone bright spot for the Beermen finishing with 22 points. San Miguel ended up winless in three games in the pocket tournament.
