The youngest members of the Gilas Pilipinas' 24-man pool are hitting two birds with one stone.
Dwight Ramos and Dave Ildefonso have the chance to fight for a spot in the national team's Final 12 for the February window while picking the brains of the veteran players to further hone their talents as they also prepare for their stints for the Ateneo Blue Eagles.
Ramos is now eligible to suit up for the Blue Eagles next season while Ildefonso, who just made the transfer to Ateneo, will be red shirting the coming season and will be good to go in Season 83.
The two admitted that the experience being tapped for the national team pool was a huge boost to their growth before taking their acts to Ateneo.
"Malaking tulong ang Gilas kasi atleast medyo naiintro na ko sa system ni Coach Tab. Di tulad sa practice ng Ateneo kasi alam na ng teammates ko yung sistema and dito sa Gilas parang bine-breakdown pa nila so it's good for me talaga," said Ildefonso.
For Ramos, meanwhile, it was an opportunity for him to learn how the game is played in the country after spending the early part of his basketball career in the U.S.
"I still have two years left playing for Ateneo, getting to learn to the PBA players before the UAAP season. It's pretty big for me so I can learn more from them how the Filipino style of basketball it is as compared to how I'm used to," said Ramos.
Ramos already showed flashes of his wares when he suited up for Ateneo in the PCCL.
On Ildefonso's part, he's just taking his time as he will be having a year and a half before getting the chance to play for coach Tab Baldwin.
" Baby steps muna kasi matagal pa yung sit-out ko e halos isa't kalahating taon pa e," he said.
The two were among the amateur standouts tapped to form the hybrid Gilas that will be battling ion the February window. They're also part of the program of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas that develops amateur standouts in preparation for the FIBA 2023 World Cup which the country will be co-hosting with Japan and Indonesia.
