San Beda fends off UST, enters PCCL Final Four

San Beda University held off University of Santo Tomas, 77-68, in the Philippine Collegiate Championship League (PCCL) - University Athletic Association of the Philippines/ National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Challenge on Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
With the victory over the Growling Tigers, the Red Lions went 2-1 in the tournament and entered the Final Four of the PCCL's Final Four.
Also in the Semifinals of the national championship are the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, the Luzon champion University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, and the Visayas-Mindanao champion which is yet to be determined.
San Beda once held a 17-point, 65-48 lead early in the fourth quarter, but UST unleashed a 14-2 run capped by a Mark Nonoy split from the line to come within five, 62-67, with 4:27 left in regulation.
However, the Red Lions roared to a 10-3 run punctuated by a Calvin Oftana three-point bomb to take a 12-point, 77-65 buffer and practically put the game away with 15 ticks left.
Sherwin Concepcion then buried a triple at the 10-second mark for the final tally of the game.
James Kwekuteye led San Beda with 14 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and four steals, while Pedro Alfaro put up 13 markers, six rebounds, and two dimes.
Kenmark Cariño chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds in the win.
CJ Cansino put up 21 points and nine rebounds to pace UST as Nonoy backstopped him with nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
Brent Paraiso cashed in 12 points, three rebounds, and two assists in a losing effort.
The Growling Tigers bowed out of the competition.
