Compton on his return to Gilas coaching staff: 'I love it, it's an honor'
by Reynald Magallon, February 14, 2020 12:21am
Gilas assistant coach Alex Compton was just glad to be back at the sidelines, not for a PBA team but rather for the national team.
Compton was tapped to be part of the coaching staff of the national team under head coach Mark Dickel and together with Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin, Batang Gilas coach Sandy Arespacochaga and Phoenix Fuel Masters assistant Topex Robinson.
The 45 year old tactician just felt honored to be helping the national team's cost once again.
"I love it, it's an honor. Super honored," said Compton who first served the country as assistant coach to Baldwin during the Olympic Qualifiers in 2014.
"It's great to help in this window. It's Gilas, it just has a special place in my heart. Buong pamilya ko pinoy e, ako lang hindi pero mga anak ko Pilipino, dito sila pinanganak," added Compton.
It also marked the return of Compton to coaching since stepping down as Alaska Aces head coach just before the start of the third conference last season.
Compton said he spent his time with his family during his free days and didn't actually realize that he missed coaching until he came back with Gilas.
"Because I have three kids, it's weird because I usually only miss something when I start doing it again and I realize how much I enjoy it. My focus has been with my family and now I realize that I do miss it but when I was with my kids that's more awesome," shared Compton.
The Cornell University product is also looking forward to learning from other seasoned coaches as they prepare for the February window of the 2021 FIBA Asia Qualifiers where they will be facing Indonesia and Thailand.
"We'll have two weeks of practice so it's quick and I'm excited to learn from Tab and Mark. I've known Sandy for years and I really respect him and obviously. I have a great relationship with Coach Topex because I've been with him in Alaska for so long," said Compton.
"It's just great being here. plus Allyn played in the NBTC, Juan, Javi did," he added.
ASked if this could be Compton's return to coaching, the American coach said it's yet to be seen, insisting his focus right now is on helping Gilas prepare in the short amount of time.
"Atleast for this window, Tab asked me maybe two months ago if I'd commit in this window and I said yes sure but I haven't decided what's next but I'm definitely here for this window and then I still have to make some decisions going forward."
