Jeff Viernes leads way as South nips North in OT in MPBL All-Star game

by Niel Victor Masoy, February 14, 2020 12:30am

Jeff Viernes showed the way as the South All-Stars nipped the North All-Stars, 126-122, on Friday midnight in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Cup All-Star game at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Viernes put up 28 points, six rebounds, and six assists in the contest that started late Thursday night and ended on Friday midnight.

With his performance, Viernes, just like in last year's event, bagged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

The 5-foot-10 guard also proved to be clutch in the game, scoring big baskets and free throws that enabled South to overcome a 90-97 deficit and forced an extra period.

Viernes scored the game-tying free throws, 112-112, before Michael Juico's triple trickled out.

In overtime, Viernes also had a hand in the South's 10-0 start as he scored on a trey and set up Gab Banal's triple that gave the South a 10-point, 122-112 buffet with 3:17 left.

But just as the South All-Stars looked poised to cruise to the win, the North All-Stars countered with a 10-0 run of their own capped by a Jeric Teng left corner triple to tie the count, 122-all, with 41 seconds to go.

Fortunately for the South, Viernes came through with clutch four free throws to get the win.

First, Viernes grabbed an offensive board off of Banal missed trey, drew a foul, and buried a pair of free throws, 124-122.

After a Juico missed trey, Viernes then sealed the triumph for the South All-Stars by drilling another pair of freebies off an intentional foul with five seconds left in the ball game.
