Sazon happy to reach 1000 MPBL career points, but insists he isn't looking for it as helping Marikina was his goal

A born scorer that he is, Yves Sazon knows that he can get buckets anytime he wants to.

And heading into Marikina's game against Rizal on Wednesday, Sazon was on the verge of making a scoring feat in the young history of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.

The six-foot guard just needed 21 points to reach his 1000 MPBL career points and he knew it.

As someone who's averaging 22.2 points per game, it was definitely a makeable thing for him to do.

However, Sazon shared he wasn't really bent on achieving it as it might affect the game of the Shoemasters in a bad way.

Thus, he waited for it, letting the opportunity present itself.

And boy, it came in a perfect time.

With under a minute left in regulation, Sazon already tallied 19 points, a point shy of reaching 1000 markers.

Marikina was down by a point, 85-86, and needed a basket to win the game, Ato Ular tried to take the go-ahead bucket but missed. Sazon then rose for the tip-in to reach his 1000th and 1001st point and gave the Shoemasters an 87-86 lead with 2.4 ticks left.

Joemari Lacastesantos tried to salvage the win for the Golden Coolers on the other end but Von Tambeling blocked his three-point attempt as Marikina held on for the win and finished its Lakan Cup campaign with a 9-21 slate.

"Masaya siyempre. Hindi ko inaasahan na pang panalo yung last shot na yung pang one thousand points ko," said Sazon, who added six rebounds and three assists in the contest.

"Iniisip ko lang naman maglaro ako, makatulong sa team, nung nalaman ko ‘di ko sinubukan i-reach e, kasi baka makaapekto sa game. Inaano ko lang na makatulong ako sa team,” he added.

MPBL recognized Sazon's feat post-game, with Philippine basketball great and league commissioner Kenneth Duremdes handing out to him the game ball at center court.

"I had the feeling na makukuha niya (yung 1000 points), I had the feeling din na baka siya nga ang mag wi-winning basket kasi naaasahan ‘yan kapag sa crucial e,” said Marikina head coach Elvis Tolentino of Sazon.

Sazon joined John Wilson as the first two and only players, who reached or eclipsed 1000 career points so far in the MPBL.
