by Reynald Magallon, February 13, 2020 4:53pm
Coach? player? or maybe even playing-coach?
Name it and Marc Pingris dedication to the national team remains the same.
Pingris' potential exclusion to the Gilas Final 12 amd possible move to a coaching position came after the long time national team player hurt his knee during the practice of the Magnolia Hotshots. Pingris was always present in the Gilas practice but didn't really join the training.
Instead, Pingris worked more similar of the assistant coaches who are helping Gilas head coach Mark Dickel facilitate the training.
"Kung ano yung sasabihin nila sa akin open naman ako dun eh playing coach, coach, player kahit ano basta para sa bayan gagawin natin," said Pingris.
The native of Pozorrubio, Pangasinan however made it clear that he still want to suit up for the team for the February window although injuries might prevent him from doing so.
"Well, syempre gusto ko maglaro but kung mas gusto ni coach na tulungan sila iassist lang sa akin yun okay lang ako kahit ano," added the Hotshots big man.
"Natamaan lang sa practice, okay naman kaya nagpaalam rin ako kay coach na di muna ako magpapractice sa Magnolia," referring to his knee.
Meanwhile, coach Mark Dickel was asked for comments regarding the possibility of the 38-year old cager joining his coaching staff.
"It certainly looks like it, unfortunately he got a problem with his knees so as soon as we can we want to get him back in but if not he would be a real benefit talking to younger players and help. It would be great to have him," said Dickel.
In previous reports, program director Tab Baldwin explained Pingris' inclusion to the pool as way to bridge the older Gilas teams to the new one and help them adapt to the culture of the national team.
"His inclusion was really to bridge the former Gilas teams that has been successful with this Gilas program and to inject into it I think the spirt the committment and the passion he has for the national team," said Baldwin.
