Justin Chua relishes another chance to make his Gilas dreams come true

by Reynald Magallon, February 12, 2020 11:23pm

This wasn't the first time that Justin Chua was tapped in the pool that will represent the country in the international stage. Back in 2011, the former Ateneo big man was included to the pool of the then-Sinag Pilipinas for the Southeast Asian Games but wasn't able to land a spot with the team.

Fast forward to 2020, Chua found himself back in the fold of the national team relishing another chance to get a roster spot for the Gilas Pilipinas.

"I played for the Sea games before pero college pa ako nun e kay coach Norman pero di ako na line up, pero sinama pa rin ako sa Indonesia, first time playing if ever," said Chua recalling that Sinag team bannered by now team captain Kiefer Ravena and Ray Parks Jr.

While admittedly the Gilas call-up caught him by surprise, Chua said he'll be trying his best in his second chance to finally realize his dream of playing for the national team.

Chua served to be a welcome presence for the national team who found itself depleted at the frontline following the pull out of Christian Standhardinger and Japeth Aguilar. The vastly improved Phoenix Fuel Masters slotman however isn't putting too much pressure on himself.

"Di ko masyado iniisip yun eh basta for me when I'm here, I'll help the team lang by as much as I can whatever they need from me. Yun lang ibibigay ko lagi," said Chua who's also looking to take any amount of knowledge and experience he can get from his national team stint.

"First of all the experience, syempre like I said in the first interview,, sobrang dream ko talaga mag gilas so ichecherish ko talaga yun hopefully in that window. We'll win everything," he added.

Chua joined the practice just last Sunday. He shared that while his still trying to cope up with the plays and defensive schemes, his chemistry with the rest of his teammates is looking good.

"Nag aadjust pa rin ako kasi yung sistema nila pretty new to me. Ang dami kong mali kanina lalo na sa defense kasi di ko pa masyado kabisado pero I'm learning it naman slowly, hopefully by tomorrow, the next day kuha ko na," he said.

Good. Good syempre everyday kami nagpapractice unti unti kami nagjijell, first scrimmage palang kami kanina, for me, so I get to learn kung paano sila maglaro Di ko masyado iniisip yun eh basta for me when I'm here, I'll help the team lang by as much as I can whatever they need from me. Yun lang ibibigay ko lagi.
