Robby Celiz led the way as General Santos beat Nueva Ecija, 80-75, on Wednesday in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Cup at the Caloocan Sports Complex.
Celiz - an Ex-Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) player - put up 23 points, 16 rebounds, and three assists as the playoffs-bound General Santos finished the elimination with a two-game winning streak and an 18-12 slate.
He was also clutch, scoring five of his total points down the stretch to keep General Santos afloat when the already-eliminated Rice Vanguards were threatening to pull off an upset.
With General Santos up by a point, Celiz scored on a driving layup and buried a jumper for a five-point, 78-73 lead with 38 seconds left in regulation.
10 seconds later, James Martinez pulled Nueva Ecija within three by scoring on a floater.
Cristopher Masaglang split his charities on the other end before ex-pro Jai Reyes missed a triple and Celiz pulled down the rebound and drew an intentional foul on Reyes.
Celiz also split his charities to give General Santos a five-point, 80-75 buffer and practically put the Rice Vanguards away with 11 ticks to go.
Ex-PBA cager Pamboy Raymundo poured in 24 points, five assists, two rebounds, and two steals to backstop Celiz, while Masaglang chipped in 13 points, six rebounds, and two steals in the win.
On the other hand, Reyes tallied a near triple-double of 13 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists on top of three steals to pace Nueva Ecija.
Also ex-pro James Martinez cashed in 22 points, six rebounds, and two steals as Maclean Sabellina produced 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Rice Vanguards fell to a 10-20 record.
