UST blasts UPIS, moves up to third spot

University of Santo Tomas (UST) whipped the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS), 87-63, to move up to the third spot in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season 82 High School Boys basketball tournament on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
With the victory over the Junior Maroons, the Tigers improved to a 5-4 win-loss card to snatch the third place from the Ateneo de Manila High School Blue Eaglets (4-4) as of posting time.
The now fourth-running Ateneo will a share a tie with UST at the third spot if it beats the Far Eastern University (FEU) Baby Tamaraws later on.
The Tiger Cubs roared to a 16-5 run that turned a 13-9 lead into a 15-point, 29-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
That proved to be the difference as UST kept on pounding the hapless UPIS and never looked back to cruise to the win and keep the latter winless through nine games (0-9).
Bismarck Lina unleashed a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds plus two assists to lead the Tiger Cubs, while James Maliwat produced 17 points and two boards.
Jacob Refuerzocortez chipped in 12 markers and four rebounds as Jan Villarez stuffed the stats sheet with nine points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
Ray Torres paced the Junior Maroons with 25 points, two rebounds, and two blocks.
Jose Gomez de Liaño backstopped him with 11 points, five assists, three steals, and two blocks as Sean Torculas poured in nine points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks.
