Nazareth School of National University survived Ateneo de Manila High School, 81-78, on Sunday to stay spotless at 8-0 in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season 82 Juniors basketball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
With the game tied at 72-all following a Forth Padrigao trey at the 3:55 mark of the fourth quarter, the Bullpups unleashed a 7-0 run capped by a Karl Quiambao basket to take a 79-72 lead with 2:21 left in regulation.
The Blue Eaglets, though, got within a point, 78-79, after a 6-0 spurt capped by Padrigao’s pair of free throws at the 1:06 mark.
Ateneo then had three chances to take the lead but Francis Lopez missed his two-pointer with 38 seconds left; Joaquin Jaymalin botched his putback off that missed field goal, and Lopez bricked a three-pointer at the four-second mark.
That led the Blue Eaglets to foul Gerry Abadiano and Carl Tamayo that put them to penalty with two seconds left in the pulsating contest.
Tamayo sank his two freebies for a three-point, 81-78 NU lead. Ateneo still had a chance to send the game into overtime but Jaymalin missed his last-gasp trey off a timeout as the Bullpups escaped with the victory.
Terrence Fortea and Karl Quiambao proved to be a one-two punch for the defending champions, with the former tallying 17 points and four rebounds and the latter pouring in a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds on top of three blocks.
Ernest Felicida chipped in 12 markers, seven boards, and four assists for the league leading NU.
Padrigao topscored for Ateneo with 30 points and two rebounds as Josh Lazaro punched in a double-double of 10 points, 16 caroms, and two assists.
Lopez put up 17 points, nine rebounds, and five blocks for the Blue Eaglets which dropped to a 4-5 slate, tied with the De La Salle Zobel (DLSZ) Junior Archers at the fifth spot in the team standings.
NU engaged Ateneo into a nip-and-tuck battle, especially in the first half where the score ended up as a 40-deadlock at the half.
The Bullpups got it going in the third period, unleashing an 11-1 run capped by an Felicida basket for a 56-46 spread at the 7:15 mark. NU then settled for an eight-point, 65-57 cushion at the end of the quarter.
The Blue Eaglets then unloaded a 15-7 run capped by a Padriago trey to tie the game with 3:55 left in the final canto. However, the Bullpups, with multiple breaks going their way, did just enough in the remaining time to pull off the hard-fought win.
