John Wilson reached his 1000 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) career points as San Juan beat Pasig, 109-99, on Saturday night in the Chooks-to-Go Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Lakan Cup at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
Entering the game, Wilson needed only four points to hit 1000 markers. He got his 998th point by scoring on a jumper at the 9:00 mark of the first quarter. He then broke through the 1000-point barrier after he drilled a triple that gave him his 1001st point with 4:35 left in the opening frame.
“Kay John, siyempre nakita naman namin na talagang masipag yung bata. Talagang trinabaho niya yung nakuha niya ngayon, he deserves yung pagkakakuha niya sa achievement na ‘yon,” San Juan head coach Randy Alcantara said of Wilson’s milestone.
“Very blessed na ako yung unang player na naka reach ng 1000 (points sa MPBL). Happy naman ako sa performance kasi pinaghihirapan ko talaga every game," Wilson said of his feat.
Wilson actually set the tone for the Knights to assert control over the Pirates in the first half as he waxed hot and drilled 17 points - built on five triples - to lead San Juan to an 11-point, 56-45 lead at the half.
Pasig rallied in the third quarter and got within three, 68-71, at the 1:39 mark, but San Juan finished the period strong with a 9-1 run capped by a Patrick Aquino layup for an 11-point, 80-69 lead.
The Knights then drew timely baskets from Aquino, Wilson, Jhonard Clarito and Jeff Tajonera to keep the Pirates at bay in the final canto.
Wilson came alive anew and scored seven points in the quarter, including the three-point bomb that gave San Juan a 12-point, 98-86 advantage with 3:34 remaining.
Both the lead and the time left proved to be enough for the Knights to get their 22nd win in 25 games (22-3) - the best record in the North Division team standings and all of the regional league.
The ex-Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) player Wilson finished with 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field, including 6-of-11 from deep, on top of five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
