Banal drops triple-double as Bacoor drubs Muntinlupa for sixth straight win

Bacoor drubbed Muntjnlupa, 98-67, on Saturday to stretch its winning run to six games in the Chooks-to-Go Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Lakan Cup at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
With the victory over the Cagers, the red hot Strikers improved to a 21-5 win-loss card, good for the second spot in the North Division standings.
Reigning Most Valuable Player (MVP) and ex-Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) cager Gab Banal showed his class once more, pouring in a triple-double of 13 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists to lead Bacoor.
Michael Cañete came through with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals, while also ex-pro Oping Sumalinog cashed in 13 markers, three steals, two rebounds, and two assists in the triumph.
After a rather slow start, Bacoor unleashed a massive 30-8 run capped by a Dawn Ochea triple to turn a 9-12 deficit in the first quarter into a 19-point, 39-20 lead at the 5:26 mark of the second period, setting up the tone for its demolition of Muntinlupa for the rest of the way.
The Strikers went on to lead by 23 points, 52-29 at the half and with their defense staying sharp and offense keep on flowing, they seized their largest lead of 33 points, 98-65, late in the final canto.
“We just need to stay steady, stay humble and hungry, just keep putting the work and trusting the work. The result will show,” Bacoor head coach Chris Gavina said of his team’s win.
The Strikers dominated the Cagers so much so that it led the latter for 34 minutes and 56 seconds. Bacoor also outclassed Muntinlupa in the rebound and assist departments, 58-37, and 29-16, respectively.
The Strikers' second stringers also outscored the Cagers' by 24 points, 42-18.
Kevin Ortuoste paced the already eliminated Muntinlupa with 21 points, three boards, and two assists as Dave Moralde backstopped him with 10 markers, three caroms, and three dimes.
Paeng Rebugio chipped in seven points, six assists, five rebounds, and two steals in the loss that snapped the Cagers' two-game winning run.
Muntinlupa fell to a 7-20 slate, good for the 13th place in the South.
