After being blown out by NorthPort in Game One last Saturday, Sol Mercado expects a Barangay Ginebra side eager to bounce back in Game Two of their best-of-five Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governor’s Cup Semifinals series on Monday at the Araneta Coliseum.
As someone who played for the Gin Kings for four years, the now Batang Pier guard Mercado knows full well that Ginebra will be back with a vengeance after its 124-90 lopsided loss in Game One.
“It’s going to be a totally different team on Monday for sure,” said the six-foot Mercado.
“I already know. I’ve been on that side. We’ve had games like this before where we got blown out and the next game, we were the one who did the blow out.”
Despite this, Mercado is still confident that the Batang Pier can hold up and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the series so long as they kept their intensity, especially on the defensive end.
“We have to try and keep our hunger and mindset on the defensive end,” said Mercado, who also sang praises to his teammates for their optimal effort during games.
“Those guys are resilient. They work hard, they play hard, we have a bunch of guys that just go balls to the wall,” uttered the 35-year-old cager.
“It works. It works for us. If we could just continue to play together and play defense together, we will be alright.”
