Biñan averted a total meltdown, fending off Imus, 88-83, to stretch its winning streak to four games on Saturday night in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Lakan Cup at the Sta. Rosa Sports Complex in Laguna.

Mark Acosta topscored for the Heroes with 17 points, on top of two rebounds and two steals as Clark Bautista backstopped him by pouring in 15 markers, three boards, and two assists.

Ex-pro Allan Mangahas orchestrated the home team’s offense as he finished with 12 dimes, while also tallying eight points and three caroms.

Jed Mendoza chipped in 10 points, five assists, three rebounds, and two steals in the victory that hiked Biñan’s record to a 10-14 win-loss card.

The Heroes led by as much as 18 points, 45-27, following a James Castañares trey at the 8:15 mark of the second quarter, but the visiting Bandera slowly chipped into the lead and pulled themselves within two, 75-77, with 4:41 left in the fourth period.

Fortunately for Biñan, Mendoza, Acosta, and Bautista came through in the clutch to save the day for the home team.

Mendoza first hit a three-point bomb to give the Heroes more breathing room, 80-75, at the 4:17 mark of the final canto. Acosta then scored on a layup and drained a trey for a 10-point, 85-75 Heroes’ advantage with 3:14 left.

The Bandera continued to fight, though, and got within four, 85-81, following a 6-0 spurt capped by a Gerald Anderson split from the line at the 1:59 mark. 14 seconds later, however, Bautista practically sealed the victory for Biñan by drilling a three-ball off an Alas Mangahas pass.

Imus can only come as close as five points, 88-83, following a Jeric Napic layup with 1:08 left as Biñan leaned on its defense for the rest of the way to get the triumph.

Former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) star Jay-jay Helterbrand flirted with a triple-double of 11 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds, on top of three steals, to pace the Bandera.

Nacpil was just as impressive, turning a double-double of 14 markers and 15 rebounds plus two blocks for good measure.

Jarrel Lim also came through with 16 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while the celebrity-baller Anderson cashed in 13 points, three dimes, and two caroms.

Imus suffered its sixth straight loss to drop to a 5-19 slate.
