Basilan nips Sarangani for sixth straight win

by Niel Victor Masoy, December 14, 2019 10:28pm

The Basilan Steel outlasted the Sarangani Marlins, 85-82, on Saturday to notch their sixth straight win in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Lakan Cup at the Sta. Rosa Sports Complex in Laguna.

Big man Cris Dumapig led Basilan with a double-double of 15 points and 18 rebounds on top of two assists and two steals as Basilan improved to a 15-8 win-loss card.

Dennis Daa cashed in 15 markers and nine boards, while Irven Palencia unloaded 14 points, six steals, five assists, and three caroms in the victory.

The Steel created some separation in the back-and-forth contest with an 8-0 run capped by a Palencia layup that turned a 75-deadlock into an eight-point, 83-75 lead at the 2:42 mark of the fourth quarter.

However, the lowly Marlins came back and pulled themselves within a point, 83-82 following a 7-0 spurt punctuated by Jorem Miranda trey with 29 seconds remaining in regulation.

Daa, though, delivered a clutch jumper to expand Basilan’s buffer to three points, 85-83, at the 3.9-second mark of the contest.

Miranda had the chance to send the game into overtime but he missed his last-gasp triple as the Steel escaped with a triumph.

Philip Manalang chipped in five points, seven assists, three rebounds, and two steals as ex-pro Jonathan Uyloan poured in seven markers, five boards, four dimes, and two steals for Basilan.

Orin Catacutan paced Saranggani with 23 points, six rebounds, and two assists, while Pari Llagas backstopped him with 17 points, eight caroms, five assists, and two steals.

Miko Estrellante put up nine points, seven boards, and four assists in the loss.

The Marlins dropped to a 1-22 record.
