Tongue-lashing from Coach Pido during practice fuels hot-shooting Garvo Lanete

by Reynald Magallon, December 14, 2019 10:18pm

Garvo Lanete credited his head coach Pido Jarencio for his hot-shooting against Ginebra San Miguel in the Game One of the 2019 Governors' Cup Best-of-Five Semi-finals series at the Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.

"I'm thankful na grabe si Coach Pido magbigay ng kumpiyansa sa akin eh, ever since, kahit lagi ako minumura nyan," said Lanete of his Batang Pier mentor.

Lanete admitted that he received some tongue-lashing from the Batang Pier head tactician, although that never discouraged him but it actually fueled him to do better.

"Minumura ako niyan pero di nawawala yung kumpiyansa ko kasi pag minumura ka niya maya-maya makikipag biro siya sa iyo so yung kumpyansa mo nandun pa rin sa taas," added Lanete.

Lanete finished with 24 points spiked by six rainbow connections to help the Batang Pier shake off the second half comeback bid of the Kings. The Batang Pier shooting guard actually poured 21 of his total output in the final frame enabling Northport to break the game wide open.

Even Lanete himself was in disbelief at how good he was shooting during that fiery fourth quarter run.

"Yun din sinasabi ko sa mga teammates ko, sabi ko I can't believe na 24 points na pala ako, so yun lang I hope to be consistent, whatever minutes I play for this team as long as makatulong ako," said Lanete.

More than the scoring outburst however, Lanete it was their defense that enabled them to draw first blood and take a 1-0 lead in their series.

"I think we played really good defense today, 'yung game plan namin nagwork talaga so we have to prepare for next game kasi knowing Ginebra, grabe mag adjust yung Ginebra, so we have to be ready," he explained.

The win definitely gave the momentum for the Batang Pier especially that they're in the middle on a improbable winning run that saw them win four straight do-or-die matches including the two victories over the twice to beat NLEX Road Warriors in the Quarterfinals.

"'Yung kumpiyansa namin mataas pa rin, especially galing kami sa panalo, ilang elimination game rin kami," he added.

Lanete also stressed that other players outside of their big three should also step-up in order to sustain their winning run.

"We have to help yung big three namin, Si Sean, Si Michael tsaka si Christian kasi once off sila kailangan namin magstep-up, so as yung bench namin, kami, ready lang talaga kami."
