After a coach-to-player relationship in the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights, LA Tenorio and Jerrick Balanza are now set to have a player-to-player relationship in the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Gin Kings.
This, after Ginebra drafted Balanza as a first pick in the second round and 13th overall in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Rookie Draft last Sunday, December 8 at the Robinson’s Place Manila.
Asked if he endorsed Balanza to the Ginebra coaching staff, Tenorio said he didn’t. The 5-foot-8 point guard, though, said he’s glad that Balanza is now in the PBA, especially with his Ginebra squad doing the honors to draft the 23-year-old cager.
“Wala, wala, desisyon talaga nila yun,” replied Tenorio.
“Natuwa lang ako kasi si Jerrick player ko sa Letran yan eh so I’m happy for him kasi he deserve to be in the league. Nakita ko siya, yung work ethic niya tsaka yung perseverance niya na talagang makapunta sa PBA. I’m happy for him, atsaka at the same time, sa’min pa siya napunta.”
Of course, Tenorio served as an assistant coach for Letran in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) season 95 Men’s basketball tournament, helping Balanza and the rest of the Knights won their first title since 2015.
Tenorio, 35, hopes Balanza would get a chance to really showcase his capabilities at Ginebra.
“Hopefully, magkaroon siya ng opportunity talaga sa amin to play. Yun lang. I’m looking forward to see all the new players,” said Tenorio, whose Ginebra team also drafted Fran Asuncion, Kent Salado, and Arvin Tolentino.
