Val Chauca showed he’s one of the best guards available in this year’s Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Rookie Draft.
See, the Filipino-Peruvian Chauca showcased his streaky scoring ability for the Family Mart - Enderun College in the first conference of this year’s Philippine Basketball Association Developmental League (PBA D-League).
And in his lone season in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Men’s basketball tournament this season 82, Chauca still proved to be a significant contributor for the Adamson University Soaring Falcons, putting up 12.0 points and 3.5 rebounds.
However, that wasn’t enough for the PBA teams to take a chance on him early in the Rookie Draft on Sunday, December 8 at the Robinson’s Place Manila.
The 5-foot-9 Chauca fell in the fourth round of the Draft with the TnT KaTropa finally picking him at the 11th and 45th overall.
Chauca said that him waiting for his name to be called for so long just motivates him to prove himself more.
“It just adds more fuel to the fire. I don’t think it’s gonna happen but man... It’s burning right now so I’m just excited,” he remarked.
While being picked so late have Chauca wanting to play with a chip on his shoulder, he said he’s still grateful for the chance of playing in the PBA.
He also vows to give it his all.
“It was a little bit unexpected (being picked late), but I’m happy I’m in. I’m just happy for the opportunity. I’m gonna show everything I have and give it all I have and I’m just excited. I’m excited to get to work.”
