Gilas Pilipinas opened its second day campaign in the Southeast Asian Games Men's 3x3 basketball tourney with a gutsy 21-13 win over Malaysia on Monday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
After a pretty slow start that saw the Filipinos trail the Malaysians, 8-5 with 6:51 left, the Philippines finally came to life thanks to the duo of C-Jay Perez and Filipino-Tongan Mo Tautaa.
The duo combined for 11 points to engineer Gilas' decisive 13-1 run which gave the Filipinos a nine-point, 18-9 advantage at the 2:39 mark of the race-to-21 contest.
Perez poured in six points in the telling run, scoring two deuces and a couple of layups. On the other hand, Tautaa asserted his size advantage over the opposition down low, tallying five points from the paint.
Tautaa, Jason Perkins, and Chris Newsome then provided the last three points of the Philippines, with the Filipino-American Newsome scoring the win-clinching layup at the 37.2 mark off a nasty crossover.
Perez and Tautaa finished the game with seven points each, while Newsome and Perkins tallied four and three markers, respetively.
With the victory, the Filipinos, who are already assured of a Semifinals spot remained spotless through their five games in the competiion.
The Philippines faces Cambodia for its last game in the premilinary round.
