At one point in the Gilas Women's 3x3 team game against Indonesia, Gilas guard Afril Bernardino was seen limping in pain as she holds on to his left thumb which she hurt after colliding with one of his defenders.
She asked to be subbed-out and the medical staffs attended to his hurting thumb.
Easily, Bernardino could have call it a night and just nurse the injury and prepare herself for the bigger and more crucial games in the second day of the tournament.
But this Filipina just had a huge heart.
Minutes after the medical staffs attended her, he checked herself back into the game and even made key plays down the stretch to help the Filipina dribblers finishe with an unblemished record in the first day of the tournament.
Asked how's her thumb after the event, Bernardino said it was even hurting more now that her adrenaline started to subside.
"Ngayon kumikirot pa rin siya and hindi ko na lang inisip yung sakit kasi lahat naman kami pinagtrabuhan tong event na ‘to. Parang pinaghandaan talaga namin ‘to. Hindi ito yung reason para mag give up," the Filipina warrior who provided the outside sniping and slashing for the fancied Filipinas.
"Sumabit sya sa one of the players ng Indonesia," she also recalled.
However, the pain was the less of Bernardino's concern as her team inched closer to the first SEAG gold for the Women 3x3 tournament. The sweet shooting guard was confident that her team can pull it off especially that they're banking on their international experience having played in numerous 3x3 competitions in Asia.
The trio of Bernardino, Jack Daniel Animam and Janine Pontejos goes way back when they competed in the FIBA 3x3 World Cup in 2018.
"Dun din po namin nakikita namin yung pagkukulang po namin sa game. Yun po yun pinapraktis namin so we can do it here sa SEA games," said Bernardino.
The three along side Clare Castro can have the shot for a podium finish and even the gold medal should they win their final preliminary assignments and advance to the knockout stages of the tournament.
