Gilas Pilipinas dominated Myanmar, 21-10, to start its 2019 Southeast Asian Games 3x3 Men’s basketball tournament campaign with back-to-back wins on Sunday, December 1 at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
The Filipinos used their size advantage, scoring the bulk of their points from the paint as the Burmese found no solution to counter the home team.
The quartet of C-Jay Perez, Chris Newsome, Jason Perkins, and Mo Tautaa pulled away with a 6-0 run, turning a 3-all deadlock into a six-point, 9-3 advantage at the 7:30 mark of the contest.
From there, the Philippines asserted its might in the paint with Tautaa and Perkins taking turns in scoring inside points. The big men duo of Tautaa and Perkins powered the Filipinos’ back-breaking 11-4 rally capped by a Perkins inside incursion for a 20-9 Gilas lead with 3:45 left.
After a Justin made free throw, Perkins won the ball game for the Philippines by scoring down low once more at the 3:26 mark.
Perkins and Tautaa combined for 12 points, seven of which came from the former while the other five came from the latter.
Perez chipped in six points built on two two-pointers as Newsome cashed in three markers in the win.
Gilas, who beat Indonesia in its first game, takes on Vietnam for its third game of the day.
