Coach Bonnie Tan on eliminating former team Lyceum: ‘Malungkot na masaya’

Defeating his former team in the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) Pirates is bittersweet for now Colegio de San Juan de Letran (CSJL) Knights head coach Bonnie Tan.
Tan shared he’s happy that Letran is now advancing to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) season 95 Men’s basketball tournament Finals, but admitted it also pains him that his new team did the feat at the expense of his old ones.
“Malungkot lang kasi kailangan lang talunin is my former team,” said Tan following Letran’s 82-78 win over LPU in their knockout Semifinals game Friday at the Cuneta Astrodome.
“Malungkot na masaya. Nakapag-championship (games) na sila the past two years,” added Tan, who used to coach the Pirates from 2003 to 2014.
But it is what it is for the 44-year-old Tan.
The soft-spoken mentor just gave the credits to his Knights, especially the graduating players in Bonbon Batiller, Jerrick Balanza, and Christian Balagasay, for their guts to fend off an equally gritty Pirates squad.
“I give it to my veteran players lalo na sa mga graduating players ng Letran. They want to prove something,” said Letran head coach Bonnie Tan post-game.
“They never give up, breaks of the game, it’s all about their effort and their dedication na talunin yung Lyceum,” he added.
