Rain or Shine survives late SMB rally to keep playoff hopes alive

The Rain or Shine Elastopainters had to endure a fiery 20-2 San Miguel Beer rally late in the final frame to hack out a 91-85 victory at the Hoops Dome in Cebu City on Saturday to keep their playoff hopes alive in the 2019 Governors' Cup.
The Epainters managed to build a lead that went up by as much as 22 points with import Rich Ross leading the charge.
ROS looked poise cruise to victory after Rey Nambatac stretched the lead back to 20, 85-65 early in the final frame when it was cut down to just 12 by the Beermen.
SMB however was unfazed by the large deficit as Chris Ross, Arwind Santos and June Mar Fajardo joined hands to unleash a back-breaking 20-3 blast.
SMB's Ross who poured eight points during that rally sparked the run with a layup. Alex Cabagnot and import John Holland followed suit with a layup and triple to come within 11, 85-74 with 4:10 left..
Javee Mocon then stopped the bleeding for ROS but the San Miguel went on with their rally with Holland and Arwind Santos capping it with back-to-back triple to cut the deficit down to just two, 87-85 with 1:17 to go.
That, however seemed to be SMB's last points as they ran out of gas failing to score on their next offensives while Rain or Shine's Ross and Gabe Norwood drained four straight free throws to seal the game.
Rich Ross and Mocon led the attack for the E-Painters with 16 points each while Nambatac unloaded 15 markers.
Chris Ross paced the Beermen with 19 points while Fajardo didn't disappoint in his return to his home turf with 17 markers. Santos added 14 while Holland who just arrived yesterday to join SMB, ended up with just 10 points.
With the win, Rain or Shine improved to a 3-7 record giving their playoffs hopes a huge boost. SMB meanwhile had their top four hopes in peril as they fell down to a 6-4 record a game behind number four, Ginebra San Miguel.
