Colegio de San Juan de Letran (CSJL) outlasted Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU), 92-87, on Friday in their Semifinals knockout match in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) season 95 Men’s basketball tournament at the Cuneta Astrodome.

With the win, the Knights advanced to the Finals, and are set to face their rivals and the defending champions San Beda University (SBU) Red Lions.

Fran Yu notched 20 points, six assists, and five rebounds to lead Letran, while Larry Muyang cashed in 19 points and nine caroms in the back-and-forth contest.

Bonbon Batiller also came through with 13 markers, six boards, and six assists as Jerrick Balanza put up 11 points and three rebounds.

“I give it to my veteran players lalo na sa mga graduating players ng Letran. They want to prove something,” said Letran head coach Bonnie Tan post-game.

“They never give up, breaks of the game, it’s all about their effort and their dedication na talunin yung Lyceum,” he added.

The Knights seemed poised to take victory as they led the Pirates by seven points, 90-83, with 45.8 seconds left in regulation.

However, Lyceum refused to go silent into the night and pulled itself within three points, 90-87, following Jaycee Marcelino’s two straight baskets, with the last one being a nifty layup at the 24-second mark.

Letran, though, kept its cool and went to its big man Larry Muyang, who had an inside incursion that stretched the Knights’ lead to five points, 92-87, with 18.1 ticks to go.

Defense then did the trick for Letran for the rest of the way as the Pirates managed to score one-point (Mike Nzeusseu split from the line at the 9.3-second mark) only in the remaining time.

The Cameroonian center Nzeusseu carried much of the load for LPU in his last game in the oldest collegiate league, pumping in a double-double of 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Jaycee Marcelino backstopped him with 26 points, three rebounds, and three assists, while Jayson David chipped in 11 points, seven caroms, four dimes, and two steals.

The scores:

Letran 92 - Yu 20, Muyang 19, Batiller 13, Balanza 11, Reyson 6, Mina 5, Sanggalang 5, Balagasay 4, Ular 4, Caralipio 2, Javillonar 2, Ambohot 1, Olivario 0.
