Before this University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season 82 Men’s basketball tournament, not a few pundits had Far Eastern University (FEU) not making the Final Four.
Still, the Tamaraws, even with a lineup mainly composed of rookies and sophomores, still finished the eliminations with an 8-6 win-loss card and reached the Semifinals as the third seed team.
And while FEU lost to University of Santo Tomas (UST) in their Semis knockout game on Wednesday, November 6, the Tamaraws made sure the Growling Tigers earn the victory from them.
Down by as much as 26 points, 54-28, at the half, FEU battled back and got within five, 70-65, with about six minutes left in regulation.
An 8-0 counter run by UST enabled the Espana-based school to secure the win with still two minutes to go, but FEU, noticeably, fought hard until the final buzzer.
With these, it’s no surprise why Tamaraws head coach Olsen Racela is still proud of his team despite them ending up with another early Final Four exit.
“Hindi maganda 'yung ending but I'm just proud of how we played this season,” said Racela.
“I don't want people to define the season because of what happened today. I don't want that game to define the season for us.”
Downcast after this setback, Racela wants his players to realize how big of an achievement that them making the Semifinals this year.
"I told them, malaking bagay 'yung na-achieve namin this season of making the Final Four," uttered the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) great.
Graduating guard Hubert Cani echoed the sentiments of his coach.
“Lahat-lahat ng hardwork ginawa namin buong season, walang parang naniwala sa amin na makakapasok kami sa Final Four, tapos ngayon nag-ano kami, naglaro kami dito,” remarked Cani.
