The Gilas Pilipinas 3x3 guard CJ Perez admitted the injury of pal Robert Bolick was huge blow to the national team's campaign in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
Bolick suffered a tear on his Arterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) on his right knee and had to undergo surgery leaving him unavailable for the biennial meet.
"Malaking kakakulangan si Robert kasi malaki maitutulong niya dito sa team eh. Pero mahirap kasi yun sa kanya na mainjure ka pastart ka pa lang sobrang nakakalungkot para sa kanya," said Perez, who along with who happened to be one of the bright spots for Gilas in the 2019 World Cup.
With Bolick out, the pressure now lies to the rest of the shoulders of Perez together with Mac Belo, Chris Newsome, Mo Tautuaa and Jason Perkins. The Columbian Dyip main man however shrugged off the pressure saying that it was just an honor to play for the flag once again.
"Kung mapapasama man syempre it's an honor makasama sa 3x3 and marepresent uli yung country kasi sabi nga nila para sa bayan puso kaya nakakexcite maglaro pag nirerepresent mo yung country," he said.
Perez, however admitted that he was still adjusting to the game especially that his only experience of playing such event was when he played in Qatar in an exhibition game during his amateur days. There's also a difference to some of th elements of the game as compared to the five-on-five.
"Malaki yung difference sa rules, shot clock, yung game clock 10 minutes lang pero dire-diretso," he said. "'Yung timeout kami rin magdedecide ng timeouts, ng subsittutions so kailangan namain matutunan 'yun," he added.
If given the chance, Perez said he will not only dedicate the tournament to the Filipino fans but also to his injured pal, Bolick.
"Yung laro na ito syempre ibibigay namin di lang para sa country pero para kay Robert din."
