University of Santo Tomas (UST) did just enough to weather Far Eastern University’s (FEU) second half storm and earn an 81-71 win Wednesday in the first phase of the stepladder Semifinals of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season 82 Men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.
With the victory, the Growling Tigers advanced to the second phase of the Semis, and are set to face the second seed and twice-to-beat armed University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons on Sunday, November 10 at the same venue.
This year’s Most Valuable Player Soulemane Chabi Yo led UST with 25 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists, while Brent Paraiso backstopped him with 18 markers and five caroms.
Renzo Subido poured in 14 points, five boards, and three assists as Rhenz Abando cashed in nine points, eight rebounds, and two blocks in the win.
“Walang madali, right from the start yung season namin. Itong laban namin akala namin madali, pero FEU (Tamaraws) kalaban namin, hindi basta-basta bibigay,” said Growling Tigers head coach Aldin Ayo post-game.
With Chabi Yo scoring 19 of his total points on a perfect 9-of-9 shooting in the first half, UST overwhelmed FEU and grab a 26-point, 54-28 lead at the half.
However, the Tamaraws charged back and got within five, 70-65, following a massive 37-16 run capped by a Wendell Comboy free throw at the 6:37 mark of the fourth quarter.
The Growling Tigers, though, answered with an 8-0 run capped by a Subido booming triple to create a 13-point, 78-65 separation with 1:28 left which proved to be enough for them to hold on for the triumph.
