Jeff Cariaso on the Magnolia-Alaska players swap: 'That was my trade'

by Reynald Magallon, November 03, 2019 10:13pm

Alaska head coach Jeff Cariaso clarified on Sunday that he was the one who decided to get Robbie Herndon and Rodney Brondial from Magnolia in exchange for Chris Banchero.

Cariaso insisted that it was a coaching staff decision and that the trade was Alaska needed during their rebuiding period with him at the helm.

"One thing I'd like to sort of clear lang especially the last 24 hours. That was really my trade. That was a coaching staff decision," said Cariaso during his post game presser after the Aces hacked out a 106-99 victory over the NorthPort Batang Pier on Sunday.

"I really feel that this trade is gonna help us. I really feel with the parts na kailangan namin. The two will fit in perfectly sa kailangan namin. And to get something, you have to give up something," added Cariaso.

Cariaso who took the coaching post for Alaska just before the conference also admitted that it was only Banchero that Magnolia wanted from the Aces roster and he had no choice but to take the risk of giving up the Fil-Italian guard for the pieces Cariaso felt he needs in the team that he builds.

"Chris Banchero was a really good player. He's done a lot for us here at Alaska but in all honesty sya din lang yung gusto ng iba, siya lang din yung medyo tradeable sa amin so for me to sort of bring in the parts that I need, you have to give up something," he explained.

"I just want to say that that was really my decision and the coaching staff's decision," he reiterated.

"Every trade naman there's a risk eh, every trade you fon't know what's gonna happen so risk ba ito? yes. kasi magaling si CB, you're giving up a good player but like I said the two players, I know they haven't played a lot lately but we know what they're capable of and we feel like that they're gonna be a perfect part of the team and the core na gusto ko na ibuo," he added.

According to the former PBA cager, Herndon can give the Aces the floor spacer that they need - a high IQ player that can play his role. Brondial meanwhile who have played under him when they're both in Ginebra, will be the extra banger in the paint for Alaska especially that Noy Baclao was injured and father time already catching up Sonny Thoss.

Cariaso also shared that he personally called Banchero and that it's all good between the Aces and the one-time All-star.

"That's something that I think I always make sure we do as soon as we know nasa PBA na, we try to always inform the players para alam na nila. With my first two trades with CBC and Chris, I made sure I called them right away, so they heard it from me, hindi sa iba. That's important to us."
