Zamboanga Family’s Brand Sardines overpowered Marikina in the fourth quarter to hack out a 74-62 win on Thursday in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Cup at the Marikina Sports Center.
Ex-pro Dennis Villamor led Zamboanga with 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists as his team silenced the Shoemasters’ home crowd for the majority of the final canto.
Alvin Pasaol backstopped him with 15 markers, six boards, and two dimes, while Leonard Santillan chipped in 11 points and six caroms.
Zamboanga engaged Marikina in a nip-and-tuck battle through three quarters before creating some separation in the final canto with a 12-2 run capped by a Santillan trey.
Such a rally turned a 52-deadlock and gave Zamboanga a 10-point, 64-54 advantage with 5:27 left in regulation.
Not wanting to let their home fans down, the Shoemasters pulled themselves within five, 66-61, following a 7-2 spurt punctuated by a Ronald Roy triple at the 3:35 mark.
Villamor, Aaron Black, and Hans Thiele, however, joined hands for a 6-0 decisive spurt that shut the door down on the Shoemasters.
First, Black scored on a power move off a baseline drive and Villamor converted on a layup before Thiele had an inside incursion to make it a 72-61 Zamboanga buffer with 48.9 ticks left.
Both the lead and the time remaining proved to be more than enough for Zamboanga to hold on for the win.
Zamboanga improved to a 12-9 slate to go a game and a half ahead of the Basilan Steel (11-8) and claim the solo fifth spot in the South Division standings.
Ex-pro Jojo Duncil paced Marikina with 16 points, three boards, and two assists as Daryl Pascual provided support of 15 markers and two caroms.
The Shoemasters suffered their second straight defeat and dropped to a 3-14 record which is deadlast in the North Division team standings.
