FEU holds off Adamson, bolsters Final Four bid

by Niel Victor Masoy, October 23, 2019 3:43pm

Far Eastern University (FEU) did just enough to hold off Adamson University (AdU), 63-60, and improve its chances of making the Final Four in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season 82 Men’s basketball tournament Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Sophomore point guard LJay Gonzales led the Tamaraws’ charge with 11 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, while graduating off guard Wendell Comboy backstopped him by pouring in 11 markers and seven boards.

Ken Tuffin cashed in 11 points and seven rebounds for FEU which improved to a 7-6 win-loss card and solidified its hold of the fourth spot in the process.

“We’re happy with the win,” said Tamaraws head coach Olsen Racela post-game.

“Ang nakuha lang namin dito (sa panalo ay) playoff for no.4. We have no reason to celebrate,” he added.

Determined to catch the last bus to the Semifinals, the Tamaraws jumped on the Soaring Falcons and led the latter by nine points, 21-12, after the first quarter, and by 12 points, 43-31, at the half.

Riding such a wave of momentum, FEU still had Adamson’s number as it led by 10 points, 59-49, following an Alec Stockton basket with 6:54 left in regulation.

Bent on avoiding elimination, Adamson unleashed an 11-3 run capped by a Lenda Douaga inside incursion to get within two, 62-60, at the 1:45 mark of the fourth quarter.

Gonzales stretched the Soaring Falcons’ buffer to three points, 63-60, by splitting his charities with 1:28 to go. From there, FEU leaned on its defense until it forced Jerom Lastimosa to miss a potential game-tying trey at the buzzer and thus, the Tamaraws held on for the win.

Douanga paced the already eliminated-Adamson with 10 points and 22 rebounds, while Ahanmisi backstopped him with 10 points and five caroms. Aaron Fermin chipped in 10 markers and five rebounds in the loss.

The Soaring Falcons fell to a 4-8 win-loss record.
