Adamson University (AdU) tightened its defensive screws and rallied in the fourth quarter to snap its four-game skid at the expense of National University (NU), 72-53, on Saturday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season 82 Men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Soaring Falcons engaged the Bulldogs into a back-and-forth action through three quarters before shackling the latter in the final canto and unleashed a decisive 23-3 run capped by a Lenda Douanga split from the line to take their biggest lead of 19-points, 70-51 cushion with 1:48 left in regulation.

That wave of momentum, the lead it created, and the time remaining proved to be more than enough for Adamson to hold off NU - which it shackled to just six points in the fourth quarter - and cruise to its fourth win in 10 outings (4-6).

The win also improved the chances of the Soaring Falcons to make the Final Four as they sit at the sixth spot in the team standings behind the fifth seed Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws (4-5), and the fourth seed De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers (4-4).

“We needed this win. Like what I mentioned sa Ateneo post-game interview, every game right now for us is important. We’re successful today because our bench really help our starters,” said Soaring Falcons head coach Franz Pumaren, whose bench players put up 40 points in the contest.

“The effort was there, the intensity was there for (Adamson),” added the decorated bench tactician.

Jerrick Ahanmisi led Adamson with 15 points and three rebounds, while rookie AP Manlapaz proved to be a spark off the bench with 14 points (10 in the fourth quarter) on 7-of-12 shooting, while also pulling down four rebounds.

Simon Camacho added 13 points, six boards, and two assists as Congolese center Douanga unloaded a double-double of 11 markers and 15 caroms. Jerom Lastimosa orchestrated the Soaring Falcons’ offense, putting up nine assists on top of 10 rebounds and four steals.

Dave Ildefonso paced the Bulldogs with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Senegalese center cashed in 14 points and 10 boards. JV Gallego put up seven points, two caroms, and two dimes as John Lloyd Clemente turned in 10 markers.

The scores:

Adamson 72 - Ahanmisi 15, Manlapaz 14, Camacho 13, Douanga 11, Lastimosa 10, Chauca 3, Yerro 3, Sabandal 2, Fermin 1, Bernardo 0, Magbuhos 0, Mojica 0.
