University of Santo Tomas (UST) jumped on University of the East (UE) and came up with a rousing 101-73 win to snap its two-game losing streak and grab the solo third spot in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season 82 Men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

Most Valuable Player (MVP) candidate Soulemane Chabi Yo led the Growling Tigers’ balanced-attack with 22 points, 14 rebounds, and two assists, while Zach Huang notched a career-high 22 points built on six triples, while also adding five rebounds.

Sherwin Concepcion chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds as  Brent Paraiso added 10 markers and two steals in the game that saw UST put up the highest scoring output in the season so far.

“It was a good game... we were able to release the pressure,” said UST head coach Aldin Ayo post-game.

“Yung past games namin grabe yung mga pressure sa mga bata eh. (Sabi ko sa kanila) kung paano tayo nagsimula dapat ganun yung approach natin,” he added.

The Growling Tigers started to break the game wide open late in the first quarter where they unleashed a 15-7 run to turn an 11-deadlock and bring an eight-point 26-18 lead in the second period.

They then practically took the fight out of the Red Warriors by putting up a 29-11 second quarter assault which gave them a 26-point, 55-29 advantage at the half.

UST never relented from there and even stretched its lead to its largest of 34 points, 72-38, following Zach Huang’s three-straight triples with 4:59 left in the third quarter.

Alex Diakhite unloaded 24 points, 12 boards, and three assists to pace UE as Neil Tolentino put up 11 points and four rebounds. Rey Suerte cashed in 10 points, three assists, and two boards, while Philip Manalang scored 10 points in the loss.

The Red Warriors fell to a 3-6 slate.
