One-and-done winger Rey Suerte of the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors is on pace to make the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season 82 Men’s basketball tourney First Mythical Team.
After the first round of eliminations, the 6-foot-3 Suerte put up 17.4 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists which earned him 61.5 statistical points (SPs).
While he’s on track to make the league’s first five, Suerte is more focused on helping the Red Warriors, who enhanced their Final Four chances by beating the Adamson University (AdU) Soaring Falcons on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The victory gave UE a 3-5 win-loss card which is just half a game behind the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws, who currently occupy the fourth spot of the standings with a 3-4 slate as of posting time.
“Hindi ko iniisip sa sarili ko. Team game to eh, so balewala yung mga ganun,” said Suerte, who was a two-time Most Valuable Player in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CeSAFI).
Of course, Suerte said he’ll take the award should he went on to make the Mythical Team.
“Kung papalarin, why not diba, ga-grab ko na lang,” he remarked.
After two straight wins, Suerte, who just celebrated his 25th birthday on Friday, October 4, wished UE gets more wins.
He also feels like the tide is starting to turn on the Red Warriors’ favor and they just need to ride such wave of momentum. Suerte stressed they need to be aggressive on both ends of the floor to give themselves more chances of winning games as well.
“Sana magtuloy-tuloy pa yung panalo,” he uttered.
“I think yung momentum, unting-unti napapa sa amin na so we need to grab it na lang. Every game is our last game na talaga. Yun ang iniisip naming mga teammates ko.
“Wag lang masyadong kampante sa mga panalo namin kasi yung mga panalo namin mga close games lahat. We need to be aggressive pa every game, adjust every single defense, offense. Kailangan talaga namin gawin yun sa mga susunod pa naming games.”
Suerte actually ranks sixth in the Most Valuable Player race behind University of Santo Tomas (UST) Beninese center Soulemane Chabi Yo (no.1 with 82.71 SPs), Ateneo De Manila University Ivorian center Ange Kouame (no. 2 with 81.43 SPs), University of the Philippines (UP) Nigerian center Bright Akhuetie (no. 3 with (69.0 SPs), UP forward Kobe Paras (no. 4 with 65.2 SPs), and University of the East (UE) Senegalese center Alex Diakhite (no.5 with 64.83 SPs).
Of those five names, four of which plays the same position - the center or the five. As per league rules, the mythical team is determined per position.
That means only one from the four MVP contenders, who plays the center position, would make the Mythical Team. That leaves three more spots to be filled - two guards and one forward.
Suerte, who plays the two and the three position, would fill in one of those wing/ guard positions and Adamson University (AdU) point guard Val Chauca (no. 11 with 50.71 SPs) would take the other one. De La Salle University forward Jamie Malonzo (no.7 with 61.5 SPs) would fill in the last forward position.
