There were plenty of heroes for the NLEX Road Warriors as they completed a magical 28-point comeback to take down Ginebra San Miguel, 113-111, in an overtime thriller in the PBA 2019 Governors' Cup at the Coca-cola Arena in Dubai.
The Road Warriors had to endure a blistering first half from Ginebra led by Justin Brownlee who torched NLEX with 33 of his 42 points in the first two quarters to take a 20 point advantage at the break. NLEX however woke up in the second half as they rallied back into the game cutting the deficit down to just three, 97-94 following an Olu Ashaolu layup with a little over five minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Ginebra, however, responded quick erecting a six point cushion, 100-94 but Philip Paniamogan and JP Erram then drained back-to-back treys to tie the game at 100-all. Ginebra look poised to take the victory though, after two Brownlee free throws and a Japeth Aguilar split from the foul line give them a three point lead, 103-100 with seven ticks left. NLEX however just refused to give up finding Kiefer Ravena who drained the game tying triple to send the game to an extra period.
It was a nip-and-tuck affair since then as Aguilar free throws gave the Kings 107-105 lead with 3:21 left in the extension period. NLEX then turned the ball over on their end which led to two more free throws for Ginebra. Scottie Thompson took care of the charities enough to give the Kings a four point cushion, 109-105. JP Erram though scored inside but LA Tenorio answered back with two conversions from the foul line for a 111-107 advantage.
Paniamogan had other things in mind though as he nailed a huge triple to cut the deficit down to one, 111-110. Brownlee then missed on Ginebra's next offensive giving NLEX a windo of hope with less than a minute remaining. The Road Warriors then found Cruz who drained another long bomb to shove NLEX ahead, 113-111 with 20 seconds remaining in the game.
Ginebra then had multiple chance to either win or tie the game but Pringle, Tenorio and Aguilar all missed their attempts in the final possession as NLEX completed a magical 28 point comeback.
Ashaolu led the attack for the Road Warriors with 25 points although he failed to finish the regulation after fouling out of the game. Paniamogan and Erram added 21 and 20 points respectively while heroes, Ravena and Cruz chipped in 13 points apiece.
The NLEX win also spoiled a monster 42 point, 20 boards and 10 assists performance from Justin Brownlee for Ginebra who absorbed their second straight defeat enough for a 1-2 record. NLEx meanwhile bounced back from a tough loss against SMB to climb up to 4-1 slate in the standings.
