The Caloocan Supremos held strong late in the game to beat the Bicol Volcanoes, 81-73, on Friday in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Cup at the STRIKE Gymnasium in Bacoor, Cavite.
The Supremos got the upper hand in the first quarter, 15-9, before taking a 39-26 lead at the half. Caloocan also led 61-46 heading into the final canto, but the Volcanoes closed in at the 3:46 mark of the fourth with a Jeffrey Ongteco free throw, 62-68.
Rene Pacquiao, however, replied with a layup for Caloocan before John Ambuludto had his own layup and AJ Mandani hit a jumper. Another Pacquiao layup made it a 76-62 game with just 1:23 left in the game.
Paul Sanga, Mandani, and Pacquiao then hit crucial free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Ambulodto top-scored for the Supremos with 20 points along with 10 rebounds while Sanga had 14 markers. Carlo Escalambre added 13 points, Thomas Torres 12, and Pacquiao 11 as Caloocan improved their win-loss record to 10-7, winning their last three outings.
Ronjay Buenafe and Chris Lalata dropped 14 points apiece for the Volcanoes but they still fell to their fifth consecutive loss—10th defeat overall—against eight wins. Alwyn Alday also had 13 points, Jerome Garcia 11, and Ongteco 10.
Caloocan will look to extend their streak when they face the Basilan Steel on October 9 while Bicol will aim to halt their slide as they tackle the Pasig Sta. Lucia Realtors on the 12th.
