Jaycee Marcelino came through in the clutch anew as Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) exacted revenge on Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC), 83-71, for its sixth straight win on Friday in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) season 95 Men's basketball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

Marcelino poured in 14 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, including big shots down the stretch as he steadied the Pirates’ ship in the face of the Generals’ brave stand in the crunch time.

Marcelino’s six straight points made it a nine-point, 71-62 lead for Lyceum with 5:20 left in regulation. EAC, though, got within four following a 5-0 spurt capped by a John Estacio inside incursion at the 4:12 mark of the contest.

But Marcelino delivered anew for the Pirates by drilling a three-ball and Reymar Caduyac padded Lyceum’s cushion to nine points after hitting a floater with 3:09 remaining in the ball game.

After a Marvin Taiwan floater, Marcelino split his charities and scored on a putback off his second missed free throw for an 11-point, 79-68 Lyceum buffer at the 2:01 mark.

Both the lead and the time remaining proved to be more than enough for the Pirates to hold off the Generals, who wielded the upset axe on them in their first round encounter, 84-82, last July 12.

“We have to really respect the EAC team, especially coach Oliver [Bunyi]. He really turned that ship around,” said LPU head coach Topex Robinson.

“It was really sustaining the energy (for us) when they were making the run. We don’t wanna look the ghost of the past but we wanna make sure that we’re not gonna make the same mistakes again,” he added.

Cameroonian slotman Mike Nzeusseu was a force for the Pirates downlow, tallying a double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds with two assists to boot.

Caduyac provided 10 points, six assists, four boards, and three steals to help the cause of LPU, which solidified its hold of the second spot in the team standings with a 12-3 win-loss card.

Marvin Taywan paced EAC with 16 points, four caroms, and two assists, while Jethro Mendoza unloaded 14 markers and four assists. Kriss Gurtiza put up nine points, three assists, and two caroms in the loss which snapped the Generals two-game winning run.

The already eliminated EAC fell to a 3-12 record.
