Lyceum outlasts Mapua for fourth straight win

Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) held off a gutsy Mapua University (MU) squad to notch its fifth straight win, 77-71, on Tuesday in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) season 95 Men’s basketball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

The Pirates rallied in the fourth quarter where it unleashed a 13-2 finishing kick that turned a 65-64 deficit into a seven-point triumph.

Marcelino twins Jaycee and Jayvee did most of the damage in that run as well as Warren Ybanez and Reymar Caduyac, who made a basket each in succession that made it a 10-point, 77-67 buffer with about a minute left in regulation.

Caduyac’s basket basically sealed the win for LPU as it improved to an 11-3 win-loss card and solidified its hold of the second spot behind the San Beda University (SBU) Red Lions, who have yet to lose through 15 games (15-0) in the tournament.

“That’s really a scary team,” Pirates head coach Topex Robinson said of Mapua which had a four-game winning streak before the game.

“We just sustained the energy, try to stay composed. What’s important is how we stuck together and kept our momentum intact,” added Robinson.

Cameroonian center Mike Nzeusseu led Lyceum with 13 points, 13 rebounds, and two assists, while Jaycee Marcelino came through anew with 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Jayvee Marcelino chipped in 10 points and two boards.

Justin Serrano paced Mapua with 17 points - 11 of which came from the fourth quarter - on top of five boards, three assists, and two steals. Warren Bonifacio backstopped him by pouring in 15 points, seven caroms, and two dimes. 

Laurenz Victoria turned in nine points, four boards, and three assists for the Cardinals, who led by as much as seven points, 16-9, in the first quarter. 

However, the Pirates outplayed them in the middle quarters and put up the telling 13-2 run in the fourth quarter to win the contest.

Mapua fell to a 7-7 record but stayed in the fifth spot of the standings.
