The Brooklyn Nets is expecting their All-Star forward Kevin Durant to miss the entire 2019-2020 National Basketball Association (NBA) season as he continues to recover from his injury, according to a report published Wednesday (Philippine time).
According to The Associated Press, Nets General Manager Sean Marks said that Durant is likely to miss the next season, adding that the former Most Valuable Player will have a say as to when he would be ready to go back into action.
"With Kevin, I think what we're going to say is the expectations are that he'll be out for the year," Marks said.
"I've been excited to see, I think we all have, how he's approached this rehab, which has been great, very refreshing and energizing for the whole group," Marks said. "But at the end of the day, this is a long-term plan here. This was never about this next season. This is about getting an elite athlete back to elite physical shape on the court, whatever that takes."
Durant is recovering from surgery to repair his ruptured Achilles tendon, which he got while playing for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. In July, Durant left Golden State to join Brooklyn. At that time, the Nets said that it’s possible for Durant to play this season.
With Durant and Kyrie Irving teaming up, the Nets could potentially be one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, especially after 42 wins and making the playoffs last season. But that may have to wait.
Durant and Irving will also have one-time All-Star DeAndre Jordan manning the paint for them.
