Jaycee Marcelino delivered key baskets down the stretch as Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) outlasted De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB), 85-80, on Friday in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) season 95 Men’s basketball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

Marcelino scored six of his 22 points in the last 2:38 of the game that helped the Pirates in holding off the equally-gutsy Blazers and notched their ninth win in 12 games - good for the second spot in the team standings.

Marcelino first drilled a pair of free throws for a five-point, 78-73 lead at the 2:38 mark of the fourth quarter. After Mike Nzeusseu made two freebies, Marcelino padded Lyceum’s cushion to nine points, 82-73, by scoring on a transition layup with 1:25 left in regulation.

Saint Benilde didn’t just fold, though, and got within four points, 82-78, following a Unique Naboa triple and a Kendrix Belgica layup off a steal at the 55-second mark.

Jaycee Marcelino, though, iced the game by scoring on a backdoor play between him and his twin brother Jayvee.

“We struggled a bit in the first half, but we picked it up,” said Pirates head coach Topex Robinson. “We just have to control the pace.”

Jaycee Marcelino added seven rebounds and two assists to his name in the nip-and-tuck contest. Nzeusseu backstopped him with a double-double of 14 markers and 10 caroms while Niño Ibañez chipped in 11 points on 3-of-3 shooting from the field while also grabbing seven boards.

Filipino-American winger Justin Gutang tallied the season’s first triple-double performance of 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists to lead the Blazers. Belgica cashed in 12 points and seven rebounds as Naboa turned in 15 points in Saint Benilde’s third straight loss.

The Blazers fell to a 6-5 slate, good for the fifth spot in the standings.
