Ahanmisi, Adamson pound UE

Jerrick Ahanmisi and the Adamson University Soaring Falcons pounded the University of the East Red Warriors in the second half to take a 91-80 victory on Wednesday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 82 Men's Basketball Tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Red Warriors led 21-19 at the end of the first quarter and the Soaring Falcons took a 44-38 lead at the half. It was still a close game with UE ahead 48-47 after John Apacible scored against Lenda Douanga in the post with early in the third quarter. Val Chauca, however, located Douanga in the paint and the big man scored two points to start an Adamson run.
Chauca then grabbed an offensive board, stepped behind the three-point line and knocked in a three-pointer. Jed Mendoza sank 1-of-2 free throws for UE before Ahanmisin sank a floater. Chauca then scored in the paint, Vince Magbuhos made two free throws, and Chauca had a trey to make it 61-50.
Adamson led by as many as 14 points in the third, 66-52, after Aaron Fermin knocked in a trey. The Soaring Falcons brought a 66-57 lead into the final canto and Ahanmisi opened the fourth with a three-pointer followed by a Lastimosa jumper for a 71-57 lead with 9:21 to go.
The Red Warriors tried their best to stage a comeback can only come to within eight at the closest, 80-88, on a Neil Tolentino basket with 21.9 seconds left. The Falcons held on to the win.
Ahanmisi led Adamson with 28 points, two rebounds, and four assists while Lastimosa added 16 points, eight boards, six dimes, and one steal. Chauca also added 13 points, two boards, and four assists and Douanga chipped in 11 points and 16 boards.
Rey Suerte top-scored for the Red Warriors with 20 points along with seven boards, six assists, and two steals. Mendoza finished with 17 points, Apacible 15, and Conner 13.
With the win, Adamson improved to a 2-1 win-loss record, tied with the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers and just behind league leaders Ateneo Blue Eagles who have a 3-0 slate. UE is at the bottom with a 0-3 record. The Soaring Falcons will gun for win number 3 on September 15 against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons while the Red Warriors will try to bounce back against La Salle on the 14th.
